How to convert protected wma songs to mp3 sings?

i got new songs for my i pod and they are protected wma and not mp3 so they wont add to to itunes and a message comes up to convert them but it says it cant convert them i tried downloading things to convert them but that doesn't work ether place help and if you recommend i use a download or site it has to be free
