Ipod must have mp3 format?

I'm planning to buy an ipod to replace my clunky old iriver h10. I decided to re rip my cds and so far did about thirty of them in wma. It seems from what I've read that they must be done in mp3 only or they will not load to an ipod. So I guess I have to start over' Is this correct?
