Why won't Sony Vegas Pro 9 let me open MP3s?

It sounds, from your description, my friend, that your current installation of Sony Vegas Pro has become corrupted. The easiest, and probably the best thing that you can do is uninstall Sony Vegas Pro and then reinstall it. (Check first, in Control Panel > Add and Remove Programs, whether a repair installation isn't possible. This MAY work.)
